Don’t quit, learn how to rest

Someting I’ve always struggled with both in my professional life and my sporting life, is tactical rest, taking a round off.

I’ve often cashed-in at times when it would’ve been wiser to ease-up, weigh my options and go all-in at the right moment.

I’ve over-committed many times, not rationed my energy wisely and ran myself into the ground more times than I’d like to admit.

It is a hard balance to strike and a difficult mental game to play, controlling your mind’s voice, pushing yourself on or holding yourself back at appropriate time.

However, it is vitally important, especially if you are an athlete and a busy person who is relied upon for things.

Nobody can beast themselves in every training session, nobody can do the work of five people every single day.

It just means that you go too hard for too long and eventually you get ill or injured and wipe yourself out for a full two weeks or more.

Doing nothing for that period is more detrimental to your progress than taking regular breaks. It sets you back to square one.

At the moment, in my training, work and everything else, I feel like I’m finally starting to get a grasp on this principle of working smarter not harder.

Don’t quit, learn how to rest.
