On this blog I’ve often talked about the films and TV shows that had a lasting effect on me when I was young.
But the one I haven’t told you about has easily had the biggest influence and that is the Lord of the Rings film adaptations directed by Peter Jackson.

One of the standout memories from my childhood is the day that I saw the Fellowship of the Ring in the cinema with my family when it was first released.
The dream-like prologue where Jackson deftly gets us up to speed on all-things Middle Earth hooked me straight away.

Then the deal was sealed with the arresting visuals and audio of The Shire.
I was spellbound immediately, hungry for every new detail I could find on this world that felt real to me, tangible and really taking place in some reality just beyond my reach.
Howard Shore’s epic soundtrack, the compelling on-screen performances and Peter Jackson’s imagery are etched on my mind forever.

So much so that when I am out on the fells or driving in the Lake District and I see the misty rolling over the dramatic landscape, I feel a pang of emotion.
It is a mixture of longing to be part of that world and of a sense of adventure that I felt all those years ago when I first saw the Fellowship trekking over the mountains on their way to Mordor.

Included in this post are just some of my pictures from those moments where Middle Earth felt close to me.
